School-Based Mental Health

School-Based Mental Health

Program Description

Since 2005, Family Service Association (FSA) has partnered with local school districts to bring mental health services directly into the school environment, making support more accessible, familiar, and connected to students’ everyday lives.

Rooted in Lisa LaForge’s early vision and FSA’s commitment to comprehensive, holistic mental health care, our School-Based Mental Health Program recognizes that students thrive when they have meaningful support across the places and relationships that matter most to them. By bringing counseling and other supportive services into schools, we help make mental health care easier to access while creating opportunities for students and families to feel heard, understood, and empowered to share their voices.

Support & Growth

Who Can Benefit?

The School-Based Mental Health Program is designed for students attending one of our partner schools who may benefit from additional support with their emotional, social, behavioral, or mental health needs.

Students may benefit from the program when they are looking for support with:

  • Managing emotions, stress, or behaviors
  • Building healthy relationships with peers, family members, and adults
  • Strengthening confidence, coping, and self-regulation skills
  • Navigating challenges at school, at home, in the community, or with friends
  • Improving school engagement, attendance, and participation
  • Building on their existing strengths and identifying new ways to achieve their goals

We meet students where they are and work collaboratively with them and their families to identify what support will be most meaningful and helpful.

Accessible Care

Program Purpose

The FSA School-Based Mental Health Program supports students in building on their strengths, developing skills, and reaching their personal and educational goals. Our clinicians work alongside students, families, educators, school support teams, and community partners to create individualized support that reflects each student’s unique needs, experiences, and strengths.

Through counseling, advocacy, care coordination, and collaboration, we help students develop emotional and behavioral regulation skills, strengthen relationships, build confidence, and navigate challenges that may affect their well-being, attendance, or school experience.

Our approach is grounded in partnership. We believe students and families are essential members of the team and that their perspectives, goals, and voices should guide the support they receive. When additional support is needed, FSA can connect students and families with a broader continuum of services within our agency and community.

Impact & Mission

Supporting Students Where They Are

When mental health support is available in the places where students learn, grow, and build relationships, care becomes a more connected part of their everyday experience. FSA’s School-Based Mental Health Program helps students and families access support, strengthen their voices, build meaningful connections, and develop the skills and confidence they need to thrive.

Our goal is not simply to address challenges—it is to help students recognize their strengths, build on their potential, and feel supported in reaching their goals.
